BRUNDYN + GONSALVES GALLERY, CAPE TOWN.
MATERIAL / REPRESENTATION
28 November - 23 January
In legal jargon, “material representation” refers to a convincing statement, information or explanation made to a person to induce that person to enter into a contract or to take a decision, which s/he would not have done without such persuasion. In other words, it is the particular aspect of a contract which renders it appealing or agreeable.
With this in mind, BRUNDYN + GONSALVES are pleased to present Material / Representation, a summer exhibition diverging between two thematic streams; Materiality and Representation. Without explicitly dichotomizing, the selection of artists has been informed by the prominence of one of these two streams within their production. Viewed in this way, emphasis is placed on the idiosyncratic ways in which each artist has applied these themes to their work (what could be called their “material representation”) allowing these traits to come palpably to the fore.
